How Living Donation Works

Understanding the process of becoming a living kidney donor

1. Initial Contact

Reach out to the transplant center or the patient directly to express your interest in learning more about donation.

2. Medical Screening

Complete comprehensive medical and psychological evaluations to ensure donation is safe for you.

3. The Surgery

Minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery, typically 2-3 hour procedure. Most donors go home in 2-3 days.

4. Recovery

Most donors return to work in 4-6 weeks. Full recovery typically takes 6-8 weeks.

5. Life After Donation

Donors can live full, healthy lives with one kidney. Lifetime follow-up care at no cost to the donor.
